Questions which will never go out of fashion

On Friday I had a conversation with a colleague about how 'fads' (for want of a better word) come and go in teaching and that it's all too easy to think that we should try to include all of them every lesson.

I think these are the important questions that it all boils down to though and for me they'll never go out of fashion:

  1. Very true. Students still ask 'When will I use this?' (or even 'Why should I learn this?'). Of course a reason can always be given, but whether it is accepted or not is another matter. There are students that won't care; they just want to learn something new. I would imagine including this within the 'What will I be learning this lesson?' question, unless it is thought of as a 'fad'?.
